| 37. Boris Andrianov (Russia) Probably, none of the finalists loves and cares for themselves as Andrianov. His playing was almost perfect playing from the technical point of view, which lacked for good any emotions and/or thoughts. The audiences, just as the cellist, enjoyed his exact positioning the high notes and perfect strokes, and forgot about Mr. Andrianov right at the moment he was leaving the stage. 44. Denis Shapovalov (Russia) Those who remember Shapovalov’s performance on the previous Tchaikovsky competition were glad to see how this cellist changes with the years. Those who heard him for the first time surely were surprised how musically and sincerely he plays. In Tchaikovsky’s Rococo variations it is hard to keep from cliche-like Rostropovich’s traditions. Shapovalov tried hard to do it though, as of now, with little success. There is still hope that in a few years he will be able to create his own traditions. Speaking about Schumann’s Concerto, too bad not everyone heard Shapovalov’s playing. It was a mature and absolutely sincere performance, of which any soloist could be proud and which could be a diamond in the records collection of any music recording company.
